We have the NEWEST iPAQ H3650 Model
Manufactured 2001

The iPAQ Kit Contains

1: I just took my device out of the box and tried to turn it on, but it did not work...what's wrong?

You first need to move the battery switch to the "on" position. Also see the documentation for details. Additionally, after moving the battery switch to the "on" position, you should charge the battery.

2: I just took my device out of the box, turned it on, and I already have a very low battery warning...why?

The device is shipped from the factory with a partial charge. By the time it arrives to you, the battery may have further discharged, such that the charge on the battery could now be low. You should plug in your device and allow it to accumulate a full charge while you complete the initial setup procedure.

3: I can't get my H3650 to connect to my PC by USB. What could be wrong?

There are many reasons that a USB connection might not function properly. Check the following:

a) To support an ActiveSync connection using USB, your host PC must be running Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Microsoft does not support an ActiveSync USB connection under Windows 95 or Windows NT.
b) ActiveSync version 3.1 (Build 9439) must be installed on your host PC before the 3650 is connected for the first time. If the 3650 is connected to the PC first, it will not be recognized properly and will be listed as an unknown USB device. If ActiveSync is installed first, when the 3650 is connected for the first time it will be recognized properly, and will be listed under the "Windows CE USB Devices" heading in Device Manager.
c) If the 3650 was connected to the PC before ActiveSync was installed, you must uninstall the 3650's USB device record in Device Manager (Go to Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs). After the device is removed and ActiveSync is installed, reconnect the 3650. It will be recognized properly and listed under the "Windows CE USB Devices" heading.
d) The version of ActiveSync installed on the host PC must be version 3.1 (Build 9439) or later. This version (or later) is on the Microsoft CD shipped in the box with the 3650. If you are using a previous version, you must upgrade. You can download an upgrade at microsoft.com

4: The voice record quality is not very good...is there any way to make it better?

In order to conserve memory space, the default recording method is GSM 8kHz mono (2KB/s). You can select a better recording format, but it will consume more memory each time a voice recording is made. In order to see a list of options and to change your voice recording format, do the following:

a) Go to "Start", "Settings", "Input"
b) Tap on the "Options" tab.
c) You will see a drop down box with "8,000 Hz, Mono (2 KB/s)". Tapping on this drop down box will show the list of other options, and allow you to select another recording format.
d) Tap on the "OK" button in the upper right part of the screen when you've selected the recording format you want

However, if you try to make a voice note in either the Calendar or Tasks application using a higher quality recording format, you may receive the following error message: "There isn't enough space for this embedded voice note. Either embedded recordings are not allowed here, or else the CODEC in use (such as PCM) does not provide enough compression. Try using a more compressed recording format (such as Mobile Voice)."

5: Where is the stylus and how do I get the stylus out of the device?

The stylus utilizes a spring mechanism to pop it out of the top of the device. There is a small silver button on the top of the device, between the infrared lens and the stylus. Push down on this button to pop the stylus out of the device. To return the stylus to its holding position, simply push the stylus back into the stylus hole. Note that the stylus does have an orientation, such that there is only one way the stylus can be pushed back into the device. Do not force the stylus in the other direction, as excessive force with the stylus in the wrong direction may cause the stylus to become stuck.

6: My unit appears to be locked up...how do I reset it?

There is a small hole near the right bottom edge of the device. Insert the tip of the stylus into the hole to reset your device. Any unsaved data in open programs (such as an email that you were in the process of writing/editing) will be lost. No saved data will be lost as a result of this reset.

7: Can I use the joystick to navigate within the Calendar application?

Yes, both the right and down directions on the joystick move the date to the next day. Likewise, both the left and up directions move the date to the previous day.

8: After remapping the application buttons in the Windows Media Player, I can not get them restored to their original settings?

In order to restore the buttons to their original mappings after having remapped them within Media Player, you need to do the following actions:

a) In Media Player, select "Tools", "Options..."
b) Tap and hold on the button you wish to unmap
c) A box will appear with the words "UN-map this button"; when it does, tap on it
d) Tap on "OK" in the upper right portion of the screen
e) The button is now un-mapped, meaning that it has no function
f) You now need to close the Media Player in order for the button to return to its original setting. You can do this using the "QMenu" application (press the application button on the front of the device with the letter "Q" on it), and then select "Close active task" at the top of the box.
g) The button you unmapped within Media Player should now be returned to its original setting

9: Battery life does not seem to be very good...are there any settings to improve the battery life?

Yes. There are several settings which can change to improve battery life.

a) To optimize battery life, turn off Backlight. Go to "Start", "Settings", tap on the "System" tab, and then select the "Backlight" applet
b) While on battery power, your iPAQ automatically suspends operation if you haven't touched the hardware buttons or used the stylus for two minutes. Maximize battery life by shortening the time. Go to "Start", "Settings", tap on the "System" tab, and then select the "Power" applet
c) The iPAQ produces sounds in response to a number of events. To optimize battery life, turn off any sounds you don't need. Go to "Start", "Settings", on the "Personal" tab, tap "Sounds & Reminders" and clear check boxes on the "Volume" and "Reminders" tabs.

All of these applets allow you to change certain settings which can get you more or less battery life, depending on their settings. Consult your user documentation for more information.

10: I'm concerned about damaging the Expansion Pack connector...why is there no protection for this connector without an Expansion Pack attached to the device?

This connector has been designed to be used with no protection necessary. However, you should not try to probe this connector with foreign objects, such as a pen, the stylus, coins, etc.

11: Do I need to have an Expansion Pack or Style Pack on the device to make it work?

No. The device is completely functional without either an Expansion Pack or a Style Pack. Expansion Packs simply add additional functionality to your system (for instance, a PCMCIA Expansion Pack allows you to operate certain PCMCIA cards with your device). A Style Pack is a cosmetic enhancement for your device.

12: I am concerned about protecting my screen from damage. What's the best way to do this?

The easiest way is to use the slipcase provided with your device. There are also various Style Packs available which further enhance the protection of your device, such as the Leather Style Pack and the Sports Style Pack.

13: How long will my battery last before it needs to be recharged?

Battery longevity depends on many factors, such as amount and type of usage. For instance, constant use of the backlight on a Bright or Super Bright setting will consume more battery power. Also, playing of audio files through the external speaker (the headphone jack consumes less power then the speaker). You can change various settings on your device to improve battery life, depending on your usage model.

14: How long does it take to recharge my battery?

This depends on how much charge your battery currently has, and can therefore range from several minutes up to several hours. Max recharge time of 3 hours when fully discharged, with a PC card jacket and without a PC card jacket.

15: Can I transfer information via IR to PalmOS-based devices?

Peacemaker enables Pocket PC users to beam information to and from a wide range of PDA devices. Peacemaker is a cross-platform Infrared transfer utility for Pocket PC. For more information go to http://www.conduits.com/ce/peacemaker.

16: I don't like the applications which launch when I push the hardware application buttons...how can I change them?

To change the default applications which are launched by each of the five application buttons, go to "Start", "Settings", "Buttons". In this applet, you can change which applications are launched by each of the buttons.

17: Can I disable the sound when an Expansion Pack is installed on the unit?

Yes. Using the QMenu application (initially tied to the application button with the "Q" on it), select "Expansion Pack", and then check the box which says "Disable Insertion Sound".

18: Can I replace the battery? Or can I add an Expansion Pack with an additional battery?

The battery is not replaceable. Currently there is a separate battery within the PC card jacket , which can provide a trickle charge to the main unit, however there may be a separate expansion battery pack at a later date, but there is not one currently.

19: How long will my data be retained after the battery is drained to the point at which the device can no longer be powered on?

You will have between 24 and 36 hours of data retention time. You should recharge your battery as soon as possible after receiving the low battery warning to prevent data loss.

20: Can I upgrade the memory?

No. You cannot increase the size of internal memory from the standard 32mb. However, you can add additional storage memory using a CompactFlash or PC Card Expansion Pack with an appropriate memory card.

21: Will I be able to upgrade the OS/ROM when new version become available?

Yes. Because the ROM in the iPAQ H3650 series is flash able, you will be able to perform upgrades or enhancements as they become available.

22: When I use the character recognizer, a faint image of the letter I draw remains on the screen for a short period of time, but only for some characters...why?

The default mode for the character recognizer utilizes a "double-stroke" mode for characters like "T". In this case, if you draw the vertical line first, and then do the horizontal top line, there will be a faint image of the vertical line remaining while the horizontal line is drawn. If you wish to disable this mode and utilize a single-stroke mode, go to "Start", "Settings", "Input", and tap on "Options" and then select the check box which says "Single Stroke".

23: I've selected a better voice recording quality, but when I try to make a voice note in the Calendar or Tasks application, I now get an error that there is not enough memory...why?

These applications have a limitation on the amount of memory which can be used to store a note. Some higher quality recording formats use too much memory for these application notes. Select a lower quality recording format in order to not get this error message.

24: How can I erase the contact information stored in the flash ROM?

In the event that you want to completely erase the backup Contact information stored in the flash memory (for instance, if you want to give your iPAQ PocketPC to another person and don't want that person to have any of your contact information), do the following:
The following will Erase all Contact Information from Flash Memory; the Contact Information remaining in Main Memory will be available until the next full reset.

a) Launch QUtilities (either using the "Q" hardware button, or by selecting "Start", "Programs", "QUtilities"
b) Tap on the "Backup" tab
c) Tap on the "Save Contacts" box
d) Tap on "Erase All" box

25: How do I connect to the Internet?

You can connect to the Internet by connecting to an ISP. You can connect to your ISP by creating a modem connection. Once connected, you can send and receive e-mail messages and view Web pages.

a) Get the following information from your ISP: ISP dial-up access telephone number, user name, password, TCP/IP settings.
b) Install a CompactFlash modem card using the optional iPAQ CF Card Expansion Pack or a PCMCIA modem card using the optional iPAQ PC Card Expansion Pack.
c) Go to "Start", "Settings", "Connections" and tap "modem". Tap "New connection". Enter name for connection, select a modem, and Enter the access phone number. Tap "Finish" and you are ready to go.

26:

When I plug in my Serial cable to my iPAQ Pocket PC, I am unable to connect via ActiveSync. The unit makes the attempt, but never connects?

Ensure the Pocket PC setting is configured for Serial connection (vs USB). If an Ethernet card is plugged into your mobile device, remove the Ethernet card. Ensure the serial cable is securely plugged into the COM port on the back of your desktop computer. Plug the other end of the serial cable securely into the correct port on your device.

27: How can I configure my device so that it doesn't sync with AvantGo channels so often?

It turns out these settings are not in your device or ActiveSync settings, but it's in the user profile on the AvantGo Web site.

a) Go to the AvantGo Web site and log in to your account.
b) Click on each of your selected channels in your account. In the channel properties you can configure the channel refresh settings, which tells the device how often to refresh.
c) Save channel settings.

ActiveSync will still check every time you sync your device, but it will not take as long.

* Actual results may vary with individual usage.
